"Suicide Squad"'s reign at the box-office was ended by the small-budget thriller "Don't Breathe", and the Jason Statham actioner "Mechanic: Resurrection" made an okay, but not impressive, debut.
Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.
As expected, the small budget thriller "Don't Breathe" proved to be exactly what was needed for a change at the top. The film opened with $26.1 million, a lot more than anyone expected, and 2.6 times its $9.9 million budget. The film also received a "B+" on Cinema Score and an 87% score on Rotten Tomatoes, which should signal a strong theatrical run for the next few weeks.
Meanwhile, "Suicide Squad" was pushed to second place with $12.1 million and a 42% drop. The film's domestic total is now at $282.8 million, while its foreign gross has reached $353.1 million. The film now ranks eighth amongst 2016 releases.
The animated features "Kubo and the Two Strings" and "Sausage Party" continue their theatrical runs in third and fourth place with $7.9 and $7.6 million, respectively. The latter's domestic total has now reached a spectacular $80 million versus a $19 million budget, which is great considering its R rating.
The top 5 is rounded up by this week's other new wide release, the action sequel "Mechanic: Resurrection" starring Jason Statham. The film scored a $7.5 million debut, which is regarded by Lionsgate as a pretty decent start for the $40 million production, especially considering the film has even more potential when it will be released in the U.K. and on home video.
New Wide Releases: "Don't Breathe", "Mechanic: Resurrection".
Biggest Drop : "Ben-Hur" (-59.6%)
Smallest Drop : "Bad Moms" (-27.5%)
