Once again, an animated feature dominates the box-office. "The Secret Life of Pets" towered above the competition, while the other new releas, the comedy "Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates", only managed a modest debut. Another big surprise came from Bollywood.

Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.

Universal and Illumination's animated film "The Secret Life of Pets" delivered a $103 million post-holiday opening weekend, the biggest debut for an original animated property ever. The record was previously held by "Inside Out" with $90 million. Also, the film is the sixth animated film to open with more than $100 million. Internationally, the film grossed $42.6 million from only nine territories. It will open in fifty-seven other countries in the next three months. "The Secret Life of Pets" received an "A-" from CinemaScore and was rated 76% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Another solid performance this week comes from last week's #2 film "The Legend of Tarzan", which managed to hold the same position and only dropped 46%. With $20.6 million grossed this weekend, the film has now reached $81.4 million domestically to which it adds a total of $54 million from overseas markets. It still has a long way to go to earn back its $180 million budget and turn a profit, but it doesn't look like the disaster it seemed to be last week.

With Tarzan in second place, Pixar's "Finding Dory" landed in third place with $20.3 million over the weekend. With a domestic total of $422.5 million, it is now the highest grossing film of 2016, and the third highest grossing animated film of all-time. The film has also earned $220.2 million internationally.

This week's other new wide release, the R-rated comedy "Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates" only managed a #4 finish with $16.6 million, but it's still a solid result and much better than what was expected.  Moviegoers awarded a "B" score, according to CinemaScore, while the critical reception earned it a 41% on Rotten Tomatoes.

"The Purge: Election Year" rounds up the Top 5 with $11.7 million following a steep 62.9% drop.

One of the week's big surprises comes from the Bollywood production "Sultan" starring Salman Khan, which finished in tenth place with $2.2 million from only 283 theaters.

New Wide Releases: "The Secret Life of Pets", "Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates".

Biggest Drop : "The Purge: Election Year" (-62.9%)

Smallest Drop : "Central Intelligence" (-35%)
