Weekend Box-Office: DORY Unstoppable; TARZAN and PURGE 3 Exceed Expectations

"Finding Dory" is still topping the charts, but this week allowed for a more diverse offering of movies, two of which, "The Legend of Tarzan" and "The Purge: Election Year" managed to perform above expectations. Spielberg's "The BFG", however, ended up being a disappointment.

Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.

Once again, "Finding Dory" finished in first place with an estimated $41.9 million. The film's domestic total stands at $372.2 million, and with the four-day weekend it should overtake its predecessor, "Finding Nemo" and become the fifth highest grossing animated feature of all-time.

The first of this week's new wide releases to make it into the top spots is "The Legend of Tarzan" with a second-place finish. The film opened with $38.1 million, a lot more than what was predicted by the industry, but given the film's $180 million budget, it's a very small victory. Overseas the film grossed $18 million, which isn't doing it any favors, so far. The critical reception was pretty negative, given the film's 35% on Rotten Tomatoes, but moviegoers seemed to like it, if we are to believe the "A-" rating given by CinemaScore.

Universal's "The Purge: Election Year" came in third with a strong $30.8 million, which is also much better than what was initially forecast by pundits. The film has already tripled its budget and slightly exceeded the $29.8 million opening weekend of "The Purge: Anarchy". The new installment in the horror franchise can hope for more as its CinemaScore rating (B+) is the highest of all three "Purge" films. Critics were divided over the quality of this sequel which is now rated 54% on Rotten Tomatoes, but it's not much of a difference from the 56% score of its predecessor.

The big shock came from Steven Spielberg's "The BFG", the director's first collaboration with Disney, which finished at #4 with an estimated $19.5 million versus a $140 million budget. This is not the director's absolute worst opening weekend, and with a generally positive reception from critics (71% on Rotten Tomatoes) and moviegoers (A-), it might manage to go as far as $70-75 million, as was the case with the director's other low openers "The Terminal" and "Bridge of Spies".

The Top 5 is rounded up by last week's #2 opener, "Independence Day: Resurgence", which finished this weekend with 16.5 million, adding up to a 59.8% drop. The film's foreign box-office is still strong at $177 million.

New Wide Releases: "The Legend of Tarzan", "The Purge: Election Year", "The BFG".

Biggest Drop : "Independence Day: Resurgence" (-59.8%)

Smallest Drop : "Central Intelligence" (-32.4%)
