This week in theaters, moviegoers will get to choose between a new Jason Statham actioner, "Mechanic: Resurrection", and the highly acclaimed horror film "Don't Breathe". In limited release, we have the biopic "Hands of Stone" starring Edgar Ramirez, Robert De Niro and Usher, and the Obama romance biopic "Southside With You". More about each movie after the jump.

MECHANIC: RESURRECTION

Arthur Bishop (Jason Statham) returns as the Mechanic in the sequel to the 2011 action thriller. As a sequel, "Mechanic: Resurrection" is about as pointless as you might expect. However, as simple popcorn entertainment, the film has two things going for it: elaborate action sequences and Jason Statham's badass charisma.

"Don't Breathe" starts off with a simple enough premise, but director Fede Alvarez plays off it beautifully and with the help of a small, but talented cast, he pulls off a satisfyingly tense thriller that ranks among the best of the home invasion subgenre.

HANDS OF STONE

HANDS OF STONE follows the life of Roberto Duran (Edgar Ramirez), the Panamanian fighter who made his professional debut in 1968 as a 16 year‐old and retired in 2002 at the age of 50. In June 1980, he defeated Sugar Ray Leonard (Usher Raymond) to capture the WBC welterweight title, but shocked the boxing world by returning to his corner in their November rematch, famously saying the words "no mas" (no more.)

Although "Hands of Stone" is a pretty shallow biopic overall, it still is rousing entertainment thanks to its well executed fight sequences, charismatic performances and historical significance. Edgar Ramirez in particular turns in a wonderful performance as Panamanian fighter Roberto Duran that is worth the watch.

SOUTHSIDE WITH YOU

Inspired by Barack and Michelle Obama's first date, SOUTHSIDE WITH YOU recounts the eventful summer day in 1989 when a young law firm associate named Barack Obama (Parker Sawyers) tried to woo lawyer Michelle Robinson (Tika Sumpter) during a daylong date that took them from the Art Institute of Chicago to a screening of Spike Lee's Do the Right Thing to the site of their first kiss outside of an ice cream parlor.

"Southside With You" manages to cast aside political issues and becomes a simple but effective date movie even as it sometimes feels overly reverential to its subjects.
