"The Secret Life of Pets" continues to dominate the box-office while the "Ghostbusters" reboot had an okay debut.
Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.
"The Secret Life of Pets" finished at the top of the box-office for a second consecutive weekend with $50.5 million, which brings its domestic total to $203 million after ten days.
The headlines, however, should have been all about the new "Ghostbusters" reboot. Unfortunately for Sony, the film couldn't secure a #1 finish. Instead, it landed in second place with a $46 million debut that feels okay, but depends a lot on how the movie will perform in the following weeks. Director Paul Feig and his lead actress Melissa McCarthy have a good track record with their previous films, so it's probably going to get past the $100 million milestone, but it will have to do a lot better than that for its $144 million budget. The international gross, so far, is $19.1 million from the UK, Australia and Brazil. The film's critical reception earned it a 73% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while moviegoers gave it a "B+" according to CinemaScore.
In third place we have "The Legend of Tarzan", which despite a bumpy start it now seems to have found a steady pace, earning $11.1 million this weekend for a domestic total of $103 million. Adding to that the $90.6 million overseas, the film has already earned back its $180 million budget, which didn't even seem possible when it opened.
At #4, Disney and Pixar's "Finding Dory" grossed $11 million this weekend, raising its domestic total to $445.5 million, enough to surpass "Shrek 2" and become the all-time highest grossing animated feature (unadjusted for inflation).
The other new wide release this week, the thriller "The Infiltrator" starring Bryan Cranston, opened in eighth place with $5.2 million from 1,600 theaters. The film scored an "A-" on CinemaScore and received a 65% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
New Wide Releases: "Ghostbusters", "The Infiltrator".
Biggest Drop : "Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates" (-54.9%)
Smallest Drop : "Central Intelligence" (-34%)
