"Finding Dory" is once again the #1 movie at the box-office, while competing new releases "Independence Day: Resurgence", "Free State of Jones" and "The Shallows" settle for less.

Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.

Disney and Pixar's "Finding Dory" managed to score the eighth largest second weekend of all-time with $73.2 million. It's also the largest second weekend for an animated film. The film's domestic total has reached $286.5 million in just ten days.

Fox's sci-fi sequel "Independence Day: Resurgence" settled for second place with $41.6 million versus a $165 million budget. The first film earned $50.2 million when it opened in 1996, which adjusted for inflation is even more than what this new installment took in. Things are complicated further by the negative reviews from critics (33% on Rotten Tomatoes) and the lukewarm moviegoers' reception (B on CinemaScore). Overseas, the sequel performed well, with an estimated $101.4 million from 57 markets, including China, which led with $37.3 million.

A much more impressive result belongs to the shark thriller "The Shallows" starring Blake Lively. The film opened with $16.7 million, nearly matching its $17 million budget. Reviews for the film were generally positive (75% on Rotten Tomatoes), while moviegoers responded with moderate enthusiasm (B+ on CinemaScore). The film has strong chances of doubling its current gross.

The other new wide release of the week, the historical drama "Free State of Jones" starring Matthew McConaughey, finished in fifth place with $7.7 million, a much weaker result than what STX Entertainment was expecting. Its budget is estimated at $50 million and it doesn't look like it can break even. The film scored 40% on Rotten Tomatoes, but received a much favorable A- score from moviegoers according to CinemaScore.
