As massive as the "Warcraft" movie might be in terms of budget and hype, it was ultimately the small-to-medium budget horror "The Conjuring 2" that succeeded in attracting moviegoers. "Now You See Me 2" wasn't much of a hit, either.
Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.
At the top of the box-office, James Wan's horror sequel "The Conjuring 2" scared up a $40 million debut domestically and $50 million overseas, which adds up to a nice total against its $40 million budget. The result is on par with its predecessor's $41.8 million opening weekend, although that film was made on half the sequel's budget. The film scored A- on Cinemascore and holds a 74% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The epic video game adaptation "Warcraft", on the other hand, only grossed $24.3 million, enough to qualify the movie for a distant second place. Although it looks like a disaster for the $160 million production, it's actually on par with recent expectations. The movie performed much, much better in China, however, where it grossed $144 million in its first four days and provided almost half of the $261 million grossed overseas. The movie received a B+ grade on Cinemascore, but a much worse 27% on Rotten Tomatoes.
In third place we find another sequel, "Now You See Me 2". The film opened with $23 million, which is a slight step down from the first film's $29.3 debut in 2013, not to mention that the sequel cost $90 million to produce, compared to its predecessor's $75 million. "Now You See Me 2" scored an A- on Cinemascore and 36% on Rotten Tomatoes.
New Wide Releases: "The Conjuring 2", "Now You See Me 2", "Warcraft".
Biggest Drop : "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows" (-58%)
Smallest Drop : "The Angry Birds Movie" (-34%)
