"Captain America: Civil War" lost its hold on the top spot at the box-office with the debut of the animated mobile app adapation "Angry Birds". Still, the comic book adaptation has plenty to be happy about. Meanwhile, "Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising" and "The Nice Guys" ranked in the Top 5 with relatively modest results.
Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.
"The Angry Birds Movie" landed on top in its opening weekend with $39 million domestically and $112 million overseas versus a $73 million budget. The film scored lots of negative reviews from critics, and moviegoers haven't responded very enthusiastically to it, which puts the animated film's future into question, especially considering Pixar's "Finding Dory" is only four weeks away from dominating the box-office. Next week's results will be very telling.
In its third weekend, "Captain America: Civil War" dropped to #2 with $33.1 million over the weekend and a pretty severe 54% drop. Still, the film is now the fourth highest grossing Marvel Cinematic Universe entry and has crossed the $1 billion mark.
Universal's comedy sequel "Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising" opened in third place with $21.7 million, somewhat below expectations. It's quite a considerable drop from the first film which opened with $49 million in 2014.
The other new wide release, Shane Black's action comedy "The Nice Guys" starring Russell Crowe and Ryan Gosling made its debut at #4 with $11.2 million, which isn't really impressive given the talent involved, but it is slightly better than initial projections indicated.
In non-Top 10 related news, "X-Men: Apocalyse" opened overseas in 75 markets and grossed $103.3 million. The film will open in the U.S. on May 27th.
New Wide Releases: "The Angry Birds Movie", "Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising", "The Nice Guys".
Biggest Drop : "Mother's Day" (-66%)
Smallest Drop : "The Jungle Book" (-35.6%)
