Weekend Box-Office: NINJA TURTLES 2 Dominates with Weak $35M Debut

As expected, "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows" was the #1 movie at the box-office, but it wasn't quite the hit everyone thought it would be. Meanwhile the romantic drama "Me Before You" fared much better, despite not taking the crown. And, last but not least, "Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping" almost didn't make the Top 10.

Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.

"Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows" scored $35 million, a pretty meager result for a movie that cost $135 million to produce. Also, the first movie grossed $65 million in its opening weekend. International ticket sales are not much better with an estimated $34 million. It's not a problem in terms of earning back their budget, but I'm sure Paramount was expecting a little more from this one.

In second place, "X-Men: Apocalypse" grossed $22.3 million and dropped a massive 66% for a domestic total of $116.4 million. From the looks of it, the movie won't be able to cross the $200 million mark, which would put it behind "X-Men: Days of Future Past" which finished with $233 million after 140 days. Not a massive difference between the two, but one that could signal a certain franchise fatigue. However, the film is performing right on schedule overseas where it brought in $286 million, pretty much on par with its predecessor, if not better.

"Me Before You" starring Emilia Clarke and Sam Claflin finished in third place with a $18.2 million debut, which could be considered a very good result since the film only cost $20 million to produce.

"Alice Through the Looking Glass" continues its poor performance at #4. The film earned $10.6 million this weekend and has now grossed $50.7 million domestically versus a $170 million budget. Still, the film makes up for its domestic shortcomings overseas where it has reached $125.5 million.

The Top 5 is rounded up by "The Angry Birds Movie" with $9.7 million.

The other new wide release of the week, the comedy "Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping" ranked eighth with only $4.63 million from 2,311 theaters, despite a positive overall reception.

New Wide Releases: "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows", "Me Before You", "Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping".

Biggest Drop : "X-Men: Apocalypse" (-66%)
