The Memorial Day weekend saw the release of "X-Men: Apocalypse" and "Alice Through the Looking Glass", and while the two films occupy the first two positions of the box-office Top 10, neither managed to surpass their respective predecessors.
Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.
"X-Men: Apocalypse" finished its opening weekend run at #1 with $65 million. That's a solid number, sure, but compared to the $90 million debut scored by "X-Men: Days of Future Past" in 2014, it's certainly a step down. Not only that, but it ranks as sixth in the entire nine-movie "X-Men" franchise. Overseas, things are doing much better as the film has already brought in $185.8 million.
Disney's sequel "Alice Through the Looking Glass" fell short of the studio's expectations. The film opened this weekend with a weak $28 million, while its predecessor, 2010's "Alice in Wonderland" opened with $116 million and went on to gross $1 billion worldwide. Furthermore, the sequel only managed $65 million internationally, which doesn't add up to a very impressive result for the $170 million production.
In its second weekend, "The Angry Birds Movie" dropped 51% and grossed $18.7 million over the weekend for a $66.3 million domestic total. The international total has reached $157 million.
The biggest surprise at the box-office this week is the inclusion of the Jane Austen adaptation "Love & Friendship" which grossed $2.4 million from its expansion to 493 theaters. The film will expand further next weekend.
New Wide Releases: "X-Men: Apocalypse", "Alice Through the Looking Glass".
Biggest Drop : "The Darkness" (-67%)
Smallest Drop : "Money Monster" (-39%)
