Weekend Box-Office: GOOSEBUMPS Tops the Charts While CRIMSON PEAK Flops

Although the weekend had four new wide releases, neither managed to impress much. The leader of the pack turned out to be the children's horror film "Goosebumps" while "Bridge of Spies" and "Crimson Peak" underperformed.

Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.

Based on the book series by R.L. Stine, who is also played in the movie by Jack Black, the PG horror adventure "Goosebumps" landed at the top of the charts with $23.5 million. With Halloween approaching, the film has some solid prospects, especially considering its $58 million budget which shouldn't prove too hard to recuperate.

While "The Martian" still holds steady in second place with $21 million over the weekend and a worldwide total of $319 million, Spielberg's "Bridge of Spies" only managed a third place debut with $15.3 million, which is somewhat below expectations. The Cold War thriller only cost $40 million to produce, which somewhat sweetens the blow, and with solid reviews and awards seasons expectations, it will eventually turn a profit.

Things aren't looking too good for Guillermo del Toro's new film "Crimson Peak". The R-rated horror scored a weak $12.8 million debut for a fourth place finish. While the film's $55 million budget shouldn't have been a big problem, the poor opening weekend performance and a generally mixed reception from both critics and audiences are bad omens for the future of this movie.

A better performance was registered by the faith-based sports drama "Woodlawn" which arrived in the Top 10 at #9 with $4.1 million from 1,533 theaters. Another solid debut belongs to the indie drama "Room" which grossed $120,000 from only four theaters.
