The sci-fi adventure sequel "Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials" is the No.1 movie at the box-office, which was the expected outcome, while Johnny Depp's gangster drama "Black Mass" came in second. The best results, however, belong to limited releases "Everest" and "Sicario".
Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.
20th Century Fox's "Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials" is the weekend winner with $30.3 million, which is actually a slight step down from the original film. Last year's "The Maze Runner" opened with $32.5 million. The trend is similar to that of the "Divergent" franchise which saw the same decline with the second installment. ;Still, the film grossed an additional $78 million overseas, and it cost a moderate $61 million to produce. I'd say that Fox is pretty much covered.
The crime drama "Black Mass" landed in second place with $23.6 million, pretty much due to the buzz surrounding Johnny Depp's performance. The film's budget is estimated at $53 million, which it will probably recouperate in about two weeks, but profits won't be spectacular.
The best results of the weekend, however belong to two of the week's limited releases. The first, the mountain-climbing drama "Everest" scored $7.5 million from only 545 theaters, as part of Universal's unprecedented decision to open the film only on IMAX and premium large format screens before a nationwide release. The gambit paid off. The intense drug cartel thriller "Sicario" also performed well with $390,000 from only six theaters. The film will open nationwide on October 2nd.
New Wide Releases: "Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials", "Black Mass".
Biggest Drop : "No Escape" (-64%)
Smallest Drop : "War Room" (-20%)
