Weekend Box-Office: ANT-MAN Finishes Ahead of PIXELS and SOUTHPAW

This weekend "Ant-Man" made up for last week's disappointing opening and managed to stay ahead of all new releases. Meanwhile, the Adam Sandler starrer "Pixels" underwhelmed.

Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.

Marvel's "Ant-Man" dropped about 57% in its second week, but still managed to stay at No. 1 thanks to a generally weak crop of new releases. The Paul Rudd superhero flick grossed $24.7 million this weekend and passed the $100 million mark. Overseas, the film grossed an additional $120 million. It might not be the kind of money Marvel is used to, but it's far from being a disaster for the $130 million production.

"Pixels" opened over the weekend to a harsh reception from critics, and it seems that moviegoers weren't very impressed by it, either. The sci-fi comedy ranked second with $24 million domestically and $25.4 internationally. It's a pretty bad opening for Sandler, but certainly not the worst he's ever had. It's just that expectations for the movie were high and it failed to meet them.

The boxing drama "Southpaw" starring Jake Gyllenhaal performed better than expected and placed fifth with a gross of $16.5 million.

The John Green adaptation "Paper Towns" followed close behind at No. 6 with $12.5 million, a lot less than the expected $20 million that were predicted for the Young Adult movie.

In other news, "Jurassic World" became the third highest-grossing movie of all time in the U.S. with a total of $623.8 million. Its worldwide total has now reached $1.542 billion. It has also surpassed "The Avengers" on both domestic and international levels.

New Wide Releases: "Pixels", "Southpaw", "Paper Towns".

Biggest Drop : "Ant-Man" (-57%)
