Over the weekend "Hotel Transylvania 2" broke records while Nancy Meyers's "The Intern" and Eli Roth's "The Green Inferno" did okay. Not very good news for "Everest", though.
Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.
As expected, "Hotel Transylvania 2" was the big winner at the box-office, with a $47.5 million opening weekend that not only surpassed the first film's $42 million debut, but also broke the September opening weekend record, also held by the original HT. The 2012 film went on to gross $148 million domestically and $358 million worldwide, and this new installment is expected to do better.
Second place was taken by the Nancy Meyers comedy "The Intern" starring Robert De Niro and Anne Hathaway which grossed $18.2 million in three days. This is the writer/director's third best debut after 2009's "It's Complicated" ($22.1) and 2000's "What Women Want" ($33.6 million).
The other wide release of the week, Eli Roth's horror flick "The Green Inferno" made its debut in ninth place with a decent $3.49 million from 1,540 theater. The film cost $6 million to produce.
Universal's "Everest" underperformed as it opened nationwide, grossing only $13 million, much less than it was expected after last week's $7 million scored in limited release.
New Wide Releases: "Hotel Transylvania 2", "The Intern", "The Green Inferno".
Biggest Drop : "Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials" (-53%)
Smallest Drop : "War Room" (-31%)
