This weekend, two new wide releases, M. Night Shyamalan's "The Visit" and the thriller "The Perfect Guy" fought hard for the top spot with decent results, providing a welcome change of pace after a couple of lacklustre weekends.
Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.
The weekend's box-office winner was "The Perfect Guy", the third consecutive movie featuring a predominantly African American cast to open at #1 alongside "Straight Outta Compton" and "War Room". The film scored a $26.7 million debut and only cost $12 million to produce.
Shyamalan's horror film "The Visit" may have ranked second, but it was a very close second. The film opened with $25.6 million, which is even better considering that this movie had a budget of $5 million. This is the first partnership between M. Night Shyamalan and Jason Blum, a combo of the former's trademark filmmaking and the latter's micro-budget efficiency, and it seems to have payed off.
Another new release was the faith-based drama "90 Minutes in Heaven" which opened at #9 with $2.1 million from 878 theaters, the largest three-day total for Samuel Goldwyn Films since 2008's "Fireproof".
New Wide Releases: "The Perfect Guy", "The Visit", "90 Minutes in Heaven".
Biggest Drop : "The Transporter Refueled" (-63%)
Smallest Drop : "War Room" (-22%)
