Ridley Scott's "The Martian" was the big winner over the weekend, although there wasn't much competition to speak of apart from the animated sequel "Hotel Transylvania 2" which is still going strong.
Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.
Director Ridley Scott really needed a break after "Exodus: Gods and Kings", and he sure got it. His new sci-fi adventure "The Martian" starring Matt Damon opened in first place with $55 million and almost broke the October record which is currently held by "Gravity" ($55.7 million). The film also grossed $45 million from 49 international markets. This is the second largest opening for both Damon (behind "The Bourne Ultimatum") and for Scott (behind "Hannibal").
"Hotel Transylvania 2" is still strong in second place with a $33 million gross in the last three days which is just $31.9% less than last week's #1 debut and an improvement over the original film. The animated sequel has now reached a total of $90.5 million domestically.
Denis Villeneuve's thriller "Sicario" expanded nationwide and climbed to #3 with a 3-day result of $12 million, adding up to the already impressive limited release and serious awards buzz.
In fourth place we have Nancy Meyers' comedy "The Intern" which is also doing well. The film only dropped 34.5% from last week and scored $11.6 million which adds up to a domestic total of $36.5 million which is similar to Meyers' "Something's Gotta Give".
Rounding up the top 5 is "Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials" with $7.6 million and a worldwide total of $211 million. The film is lagging behind the original film and doesn't look like it can equal its $340 million global box-office.
New Wide Releases: "The Martian".
Biggest Drop : "Everest" (-58%)
Smallest Drop : "Hotel Transylvania 2" (-31.9%)
