justice-league-movie-zack-snyder

zack-snyder-superman-batman-justice-league
While it was fairly obvious that Warner Bros. was planning something big to follow its upcoming superhero extravaganza sequel "Superman Vs. Batman", an official confirmation has finally arrived today. Yes, WB is planning to make the "Justice League" movie, and, yes, "Man of Steel" director Zack Snyder will helm it. Furthermore, it seems that the superhero team-up movie will be released sometime in 2018. Snyder is currently working on "Superman Vs. Batman" (unofficial title, by the way) which stars Henry Cavill as Superman, Ben Affleck as Batman, Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman, Jeremy Irons as Alfred and Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor. A new addition to the sequel's cast first sparked suspicions that WB is planning a "Justice League" movie. The new addition is Broadway actor Ray Fisher, who will play Cyborg, another member of the famous gathering of superheroes. The release date for "Superman Vs. Batman" has been set for release on May 6, 2016.

The first confirmation for "Justice League" came from Warner Bros. president of worldwide production Greg Silverman, who said that the 2016 Batman/Superman movie will be followed by "Justice League" sometime in 2018. Silverman went on to say that "It will be a further expansion of this universe" and "Superman vs Batman will lead into Justice League." And another bit of news came via Twitter from Borys Kit, a writer for the Hollywood Reporter, who stated that "Yes, Zack Snyder will direct Justice League. Yes it will shoot back to back. Likely release date: 2017. Likely announcement: Comic Con."

So there you have it, DC fans. The "Justice League" is finally coming.

the-other-woman-2014-box-office

"Captain America: The Winter Soldier" has been finally unseated from the top spot at the box-office by a trio of ladies. The comedy "The Other Woman" starring Cameron Diaz, Leslie Mann and Kate Upton was this weekend's top movie, grossing $24.7 million domestically and $20 million internationally. The Cap dropped to second place with $16 million over the weekend, but it has already grossed $225 million in the U.S. alone ($642 million globally), making it the highest-grossing April release ever. The previous record-holder for the month was "Fast Five" with $209 million.

Paul Walker's final finished film "Brick Mansions" performed modestly and only managed to open in fifth place with $9.6 million. The film is a remake of Pierre Morel's "Banlieue 13", and despite a slow start, the studio is apparently content with the film's debut.

The other wide release of the week, the horror "The Quiet Ones" performed poorly. The film landed in seventh place with $4 million, well below the studios expectations and quite a disappointment considering that similarly-themed movies have performed better than this in the past weeks.

In other box-office news, "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" has earned another $67.2 for its second weekend in foreign markets, bringing its global gross to $132 million. The sequel opens in the U.S. on May 2nd.

More box-office details and the complete top 10, after the jump.

Emily Browning ("Sucker Punch", "Pompeii") is in talks to join the cast of the crime thriller "Legends". The film is written and directed by Brian Helgeland ("42", "L.A. Confidential") and it stars Tom Hardy ("The Dark Knight Rises") in a dual role as identical twins Reggie and Robbie Kray who were "infamous for their criminal exploits in London during the 1950s and 1960s." Browning will play "a young woman who tragically falls for Reggie and marries him, hoping he will change his gangster ways." Filming is scheduled to begin in London later this spring. The actress recently starred in the disaster epic "Pompeii" and her earlier credits include films like "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events", the horror "The Uninvited", Zack Snyder's "Sucker Punch" and the indie drama "Sleeping Beauty" which was nominated for the Palme d'Or in 2011.

Five new clips and twelve images have been released for the comedy "Neighbors". The film is directed by Nicholas Stoller ("The Five-Year Engagement") and it stars Seth Rogen, Rose Byrne, Zac Efron, Dave Franco, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Jake Johnson, Ike Barinholtz, Jason Mantozoukas and Lisa Kudrow. Early reviews praise the film as "an uproarious and hugely commercial vision of intergenerational warfare", "uproariously funny and almost breathtakingly dirty" and "more than your typical frat house movie". Rogen, Byrne, Efron and Franco have all enjoyed equally spectacular praises from the critics, so it's quite possible that this comedy will be a big hit.

"Neighbors" opens in theaters on May 9, 2014.

ben-hur-remake-news
MGM and Paramount Pictures are working on a "Ben-Hur" remake and the studios have announced today the official release date for the project: February 26, 2016. The announcement came via an official press release which you can read after the jump, and in that press release, the studios also unveiled the creative powers that will be hard at work to bring this project to fruition. The film will be produced by Mark Burnett and Roma Downey, the same team behind the popular TV miniseries "The Bible" and its big screen spin-off "Son of God", and it will be directed by Timur Bekmambetov ("Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter", "Wanted"). Bekmambetov seems like an odd choice for the project, but he is a very strong visual director, so at least I can hope that the remake will look amazing.

Lew Wallace's novel "Ben-Hur: A Tale Of The Christ" is the story of "a falsely accused nobleman who survives years of slavery to take vengeance on his best friend who betrayed him. Both must come to choose between retribution or forgiveness." The story follows the life of Judah Ben Hur in parallel to that of Jesus Christ, so the choice of producers confirms initial reports that the remake will be a more faith-driven film than the original 1959 adaptation. For those unfamiliar with the 1959 film, it was directed by William Wyler, it starred Charlton Heston and won 11 Academy Awards, a record that went unchallanged until it was matched by "Titanic" in 1998 and "Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" in 2004.

There, he finds both fun and dangers, and ultimately discovers his destiny—to become the hero who will be forever known as Peter Pan."

lets-be-cops-movie-red-band-trailer

A red-band trailer has been released for the comedy "Let's Be Cops". Damon Wayans Jr. and Jake Johnson star as two struggling friends who dress up as police officers for a costume party, but soon discover that people actually think they're the real thing. This soon leads to trouble as the two end up tangled in a real life web of mobsters and dirty detectives. The trailer looks funny enough, assuming these aren't the film's only highlights, but the movie does seem to emulate that same "Hangover" quality that most R-rated comedies have these days. Nina Dobrev, Rob Riggle, James D’Arcy and Keegan-Michael Key also star.

"Let's Be Cops" opens in theaters on August 13th.

The film stars Mia Wasikowska, John Cusack, Julianne Moore, Robert Pattinson, Olivia Williams and Sarah Gadon.

"Maps to the Stars" opens in France and Italy on May 21st and it will most certainly premiere at the Cannes Film Festival.

scarlett johansson
Lupita Nyong’o
Scarlett Johansson ("The Avengers") and Oscar-winner Lupita Nyong'o ("12 Years a Slave") are currently in talks to join the cast of director Jon Favreau's "The Jungle Book". The two actresses will lend their voices to characters from the film, which will be a live-action/CG hybrid. Johansson is in negotiations to voice Kaa, the python with a hypnotic gaze, and Nyong’o is in final talks to play Rakcha, the wolf that adopts Mowgli. Idris Elba has already been cast as the voice of Shere Khan, the man-eating tiger. The film is a new adaptation by Disney of the classic Rudyard Kipling tale, but it's just one of two projects underway. Warner Bros. is also making a live-action adaptation of "Jungle Book" with Andy Serkis directing. Disney's "The Jungle Book" should begin production soon and it will be released in theaters on October 29, 2015.

Emily Blunt ("Edge of Tomorrow") and Benicio Del Toro ("Traffic") are set to star in the thriller "Sicario" which will be directed by Denis Villeneuve ("Prisoners") from a script by Taylor Sheridan. Blunt will play a "an officer from Tuscon who travels across the border to Mexico with a pair of mercenaries in order to track down a drug lord." As for Del Toro, there's no word on what role he'll be playing, but I suspect it will be either the drug lord (best fit, I think), or one of the mercenaries. Villeneuve will begin filming "Sicario" this summer for a 2015 release, and then he will begin work on "Story of Your Life" at the beginning of next year.

Emily Blunt can also be seen this summer opposite Tom Cruise in "Edge of Tomorrow" and in the Disney musical "Into the Woods". Benicio Del Toro also stars in several projects set for release in 2014, including "Paradise Lost", Paul Thomas Anderson's "Inherent Vice" and Marvel's "Guardians of the Galaxy".

Filming has begun for the new installment in the "Jurassic Park" franchise. Titled "Jurassic World", the sequel is written and directed by Colin Trevvorow ("Safety Not Guaranteed") and promises the start of a new trilogy. Filming is underway in Hawaii, and Entertainment Weekly has released three behind-the-scenes images that give us a first look at Bryce Dallas Howard and some of the locations from the film. One of the images (a damaged truck with "construction" written on the side) could possibly suggest that the plot involves the building of a new dinosaur park, which means people have not learned anything from the first two films. The sequel's cast also features Chris Pratt, Nick Robinson, Ty Simpkins, Vincent D’Onofrio, Omar Sy, B.D. Wong, Judy Greer, Jake Johnson and Irrfan Khan.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua ("Training Day"), the film is an adaptation of a 1980s TV show and it stars Denzel Washington as a former black ops commando who picks a fight with the Russian mafia to save a young girl (Chloe Grace Moretz). This reawakens the old soldier's desire for justice, and if we are to believe what the filmmakers are saying, this could be the first in a potential movie franchise. Marton Csokas, David Harbour, Bill Pullman and Melissa Leo also star.

"The Equalizer" opens in theaters on September 26th.

sin-city-dame-to-kill-for-new-trailer

Dimension Films has released a new 60-second trailer for Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller's "Sin City: A Dame to Kill For". The sequel mixes two of Miller’s classic stories with new tales from Sin City and although many people seem to take issue with the fact that the film's aesthetic looks inferior to the original, or just more of the same, I think it's just fine. I believe it will be more important if the stories themselves will be interesting or not. The film stars Eva Green, Josh Brolin, Mickey Rourke, Jessica Alba, Bruce Willis, Rosario Dawson, Jaime King, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Dennis Haysbert, Christopher Meloni, Jeremy Piven, Ray Liotta, Juno Temple, Stacy Keach and Julia Garner.
