Weekend Box Office: MERCY Takes Down AVATAR: FIRE AND ASH

Weekend Box Office Mercy Avatar Fire And Ash

The sci-fi thriller "Mercy" succeeded in securing the #1 position at the box-office, dethroning "Avatar: Fire and Ash" after five consecutive weeks at the top, but overall, it wasn't a great weekend for new releases. Even the #1 movie is a bonafide flop, while the other new wide release, the horror sequel "Return to Silent Hill" also tanked.

Read more about the weekend box office after the jump.

Timur Bekmambetov's "Mercy" starring Chris Pratt and Rebecca Ferguson opened in first place but only grossed $10.8 million from 3,468 theaters, which isn't great considering the movie cost around $60 million to produce. Overseas it only adds another $1 million. It's also Pratt's lowest debut, below 2016's "Passengers" ($14.8 million). The film received a negative reception from critics (22% on Rotten Tomatoes), and audiences were mostly mixed on it ("B-" CinemaScore).

"Avatar: Fire and Ash" finished its sixth weekend in second place with $6.4 million and a pretty serious 55.8% drop (its steepest yet). The film has now grossed $377.9 million domestically, and has finally crossed the $1 billion mark overseas, which brings its worldwide cume to $1.3 billion, however, it doesn't seem likely that James Cameron's threequel will hit the $2 billion mark like the previous "Avatar" films.

"Zootopia 2" is holding in third place with $5.3 million, a steeper 42.2% drop than in previous weeks. The film has now crossed the $400 million milestone domestically, and internationally it adds another $1.3 billion for a massive worldwide total of $1.74 billion, placing it well out of reach of Cameron's "Avatar: Fire and Ash".

Another holdover is Paul Feig's "The Housemaid" in fourth place with $3.9 million, down 53.9%. The film might be slowing down, but it has already proven itself to be the proverbial sleeper hit that is so rare these days, raking in a total of $115.1 million in North American and $105.4 million from foreign markets. That's a global total of $220.6 million against a $35 million budget.

Rounding out the Top 5 is "Marty Supreme", also holding steady with $3.5 million, a 35.1% decline from last week. With $86.2 million domestically and another $23.1 milliion from overseas markets, its global tally now sits at $109.4 million. It's a solid performance for A24, but with a $70 million budget, it won't have much of a profit margin.

Sadly, despite a glowing reception from both critics and moviegoers, "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple" dropped a catastrophic 72.6% in its second weekend, raking in $3.4 million and finishing in sixth place after opening at #2 last week. This brings its domestic total to $20.5 million, while internationally it adds another $25.3 million for a global cume of $45.8 million. A disaster for the $63 million production.

In seventh place we find the last of the new wide releases, "Return to Silent Hill" with only $3.2 million from 2,000 theaters. The threequel lands at the bottom of the franchise, below the original "Silent Hill" adaptation ($20.1 million in 2006), and its sequel "Silent Hill: Revelation" ($8 million in 2012). The new film cost around $23 million to produce. It was savaged by critics (17% on Rotten Tomatoes).
