Weekend Box Office: AVATAR Still #1 After Five Weeks While 28 YEARS LATER: THE BONE TEMPLE Flops Over MLK Frame

Weekend Box Office Avatar Fire And Ash 28 Years Later Bone Temple

"Avatar: Fire and Ash" is still holding in first place over the MLK weekend, scoring five consecutive frames at the top, although this could be its last. Meanwhile, the newly released horror sequel "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple" took an unexpected stumble as it opened well below predictions. Once again, "Zootopia 2" and "The Housemaid" are keeping business alive.

Read more about the weekend box office after the jump.

The "Avatar" threequel topped the box office charts with $14.5 million in its fifth weekend, down 32.6% from its previous frame. The film has now grossed a total of $368 million in North America, and $955.3 million from foreign markets. Previous films in the franchise made it to seven consecutive weekend at #1, although "Fire and Ash" is lagging behind both the first and second films. Domestically it is now the #4 movie of 2025, surpassing James Gunn's "Superman".

"28 Years Later: The Bone Temple" opened in second place with $13 million from 3,506 theaters, less than half of the $30 million debut of "28 Years Later", which opened on June 12, 2025. Overseas, the new installment only raked in $16.2 million which brings its worldwide debut to $31.2 million. It's also less than filmmaker Nia DaCosta's "Candyman" reboot, which opened with $22 million in 2021. Not great, considering the movie reportedly cost $63 million to produce. At least the film enjoyed a very positive reception from both critics (93% on Rotten Tomatoes) and moviegoers ("A-" CinemaScore).

"Zootopia 2" climbed from #4 to #3 with $9.2 million over the weekend, which is an incredible 8% drop from last week. The domestic tally has now reached $393.2 million, while internationally it adds another $1.3 billion for a global total of $1.7 billlion, which now makes it Hollywood's highest-grossing animated film of all time, a record previously held by "Inside Out 2". "Ne Zha 2" remains the biggest animated movie ever, with $2.25 billion.

In fourth place we find "The Housemaid" with $8.5 million, down just 21.5% in its fifth weekend. The film has now grossed a total of $108.8 million domestically, and $68.6 million overseas, which adds up to $177.5 million worldwide against a $35 million budget.

The Top 5 is rounded out by "Marty Supreme" with $5.4 million, which is a 26.8% decrease from the previous weekend. Domestically, the film has now grossed $80.8 million, becoming A24's highest-grossing movie in North America, surpassing "Everything Everywhere All at Once" ($77 million domestically). However, the latter still remains the studio's biggest worldwide release with $142 million, followed by "Civil War" with $127 million. "Marty Supreme" adds another $13.9 million from international markets for a global cume of $94.8 million.

In other news, Peter Jackson's "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" was re-released in theaters by Fathom Entertainment and finished in seventh place with $3.4 million from 1,686 theaters. "The Two Towers" was also re-released and landed in tenth place with $2.4 million from 1,688 screens. The trilogy made over $5 million just in pre-sales alone.
