James Gunn's "Superman", DC Studios' first in a newly rebooted "Gods and Monsters" cinematic universe, is off to a great start, even though it's not quite the best-ever superhero movie opening weekend. The movie also helped the overall box office gain momentum after a series of weekends that kept trailing behind 2024.

Warner Bros' "Superman" conquered the box-office with $125 million from 4,135 theaters, which is 2025's biggest superhero movie debut and the third-best overall of the year. "Man of Steel" opened with $116.6 million in 2013, but adjusted for inflation that would be around $160 million today. The 2025 reboot's debut also lands behind two other DC movies: "Suicide Squad" ($133.6 million in 2016) and "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" ($166 million in 2016).
Gunn's movie added another $95 million internationally for a $220 million worldwide debut against a reported budget of $225 million. The film received a positive reception from both critics (83% on Rotten Tomatoes) and moviegoers ("A-" CinemaScore).
"Jurassic World: Rebirth" finished its second weekend in second place with $40.3 million (down 56.2%), which brings its domestic total to $232.4 million. With another $300.2 million from foreign markets, the film's global tally has now reached $532.6 million.
"F1: The Movie" dropped to third place with $13 million and a 49.3% decline in its third weekend. The domestic cume is now at $136.2 million, and it adds another $257.2 million from overseas for a $393.4 million worldwide total.
The live-action remake "How to Train Your Dragon" is now in fourth place, grossing $7.9 million in its fifth weekend in theaters. That's a soft 29.7% drop from the previous frame. Domestically it's now at $239.9 million, while internationally it raked in $321.7 million. The worldwide total is now $561.6 million.
The Top 5 is rounded out by Pixar's "Elio" which has slowed down its decline, grossing $4 million in its fourth weekend. Even though that's a solid 30% drop, it seems to be too little too late, as the $200+ million movie has only grossed $63.8 million in North America and another $53.7 million from foreign markets. That adds up to a disappointing $117.5 million global total.
