Disney's live action remake "Lilo & Stitch" exploded at the the Memorial Day box office while Tom Cruise's final chapter in the "Mission: Impossible" saga scored a franchise-high debut. Meanwhile, Angel Studios' new film "The Last Rodeo" didn't make much of an impression. Overall, it was a strong weekend at the box office after a couple of underwhelming months, setting a new Memorial Day record as the Top Ten movies earned a total of around $325 million over the 4-day frame, surpassing 2013's previous record of $314 million. It's also a vast improvement over last year's $132.7 million Memorial Day weekend.

"Lilo & Stitch" led the charge in first place with $146 million from 4,410 theaters, which is the third biggest 3-day debut for Disney, behind "The Lion King" remake (191.7 million) and the "Beauty and the Beast" remake ($174.7 million). Who said creative bankruptcy isn't profitable ? The film earned a total of $182 million for the extended holiday frame, oficially breaking the record of highest Memorial Day weekend previously held by "Top Gun: Maverick" ($126.7 million 3-day and $160.5 million 4-day). Overseas, the film adds another $178.6 million for a worldwide debut of $361.2 million against a budget of $100 million (relatively modest by Disney standards). The remake received mixed reviews from critics (69% on Rotten Tomatoes), but the audience reception has been mostly positive ("A" Cinemascore).
"Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning" opened in second place with $64 million from 3,857 theaters, which is a domestic record for the franchise, beating "Fallout" ($61.2 million). The new installment went on to gross $79 million over the entire four-day holiday frame. Internationally, the film raked in $127 million for a worldwide debut of $206 million. Unfortunately, it also cost around $400 million to produce, which means it would need to at least close in on the $1 billion mark in order to turn a profit. "The Final Reckoning" received a warm reception from both critics (80% on Rotten Tomatoes) and moviegoers ("A-" CinemaScore).
"Final Destination: Bloodlines" fell to third place in its sophomore weekend, grossing $19.3 million. That's a steep 62.5% drop, which is not unusual for horror films, especially considering its current competition. The 4-day total ended up at $24.5 million. The film has now grossed $94.2 million in North America and another $92.6 million overseas, which adds up to $186.8 million worldwide.
Marvel's "Thunderbolts*" finished in fourth place with $9.6 million, down 41.8% from last weekend. Domestically it has grossed $174.4 million after four weeks in theaters, while internationally it adds another $182.9 million for a worldwide total of $357.4 million.
The Top 5 is rounded out by the vampire horror film "Sinners" with $8.6 million (-43.2%). After six weeks in theaters, the film has grossed a total of 258.7 million domestically and $80.1 million internationally. That's a total of $338.8 million globally.
The new semi-wide release "The Last Rodeo" opened in sixth place with $5.4 million from 2,205 theaters. The 4-day total sits at $6.25 million. Its saving grace is that it only cost $8 million to produce.
In other news, the dark comedy "Friendship" is still holding strong in seventh place with $4.5 million. The film added 995 theaters and grew 227.9% over the weekend. The film has now grossed $8.3 million since its limited release on May 9th.
