It was certainly a busy weekend at the box office with the release of four new movies and another episode of "The Chosen". The religious animated film "The King of Kings", the spy thriller "The Amateur", the war film "Warfare", the Blumhouse thriller "Drop" and "The Chosen: Last Supper Part 3" all battled it out at the box office but were no match for the behemoth called "A Minecraft Movie", which steamrolled over the competition to dominate its sophomore weekend.

"A Minecraft Movie" topped the box office charts for a second consecutive weekend, grossing another $78.5 million, down 51.8% in its sophomore frame. With $278.8 mllion, the film has become the highest grossing domestic release of 2025 and the second-highest video game adaptation of all-time. With another $273.8 million from international markets, the film's worldwide tally has reached $552.6 million. It still has a ways to go before surpassing "The Super Mario Bros. Movie", which ended its theatrical run with $1.35 billion.
The Biblical animated film "The King of Kings" opened in second place with $19.3 million from 3,200 theaters. As far as animated religious films go, that's better than the $14.5 million opening of "Prince of Egypt", although that's unadjusted for inflation. It also tops Sony's 2017 animated nativity movie "The Star" ($9.8 million). "The King of Kings" was also fairly cheap, costing only $5 million to produce. The film received mixed reviews from critics (64% on Rotten Tomatoes), but moviegoers definitely enjoyed it ("A+" CinemaScore), which bodes well for Easter weekend.
The Rami Malek starrer "The Amateur" made its debut in third place with $14.8 million from 3,400 theaters. Not a bad start for 20th Century Studios' spy thriller, which also added another $17.4 million internationally for a $32.2 million global debut. Unfortunately, with a $60 million production budget, it's nowhere near a big hit. Both the critical and audience reception were mostly mixed (61% on Rotten Tomatoes and "B+" CinemaScore).
A24's Iraq War movie "Warfare" launched at #4 with $8.3 million from 2,670 theaters. It's not as impressive as co-director Alex Garland's "Civil War" ($25.5 million debut last year), but given the subject matter it's not terrible, either. It also helps that it only cost $20 million to produce. The film received rave reviews from critics (93% on Rotten Tomatoes) and a solid audience reception ("A-" CinemaScore), which could help boost word-of-mouth.
The Top 5 is rounded out by the last of the new movies, the psychological thriller "Drop", which opened with a modest $7.3 million from 3,085 theaters. That's the lowest debut for a Blumhouse flick this year. The film also raked in $2.5 million overseas. Its saving grace is a low $11 million budget. The critical reception was solid (83% on Rotten Tomatoes), but moviegoers weren't impressed ("B" CinemaScore).
And once again, we have another "The Chosen" release as "Last Supper - Part 3" opened in sixth place with $6 million from 2,296 theaters, a lower debut compared to Part 2 ($6.9 million) and Part 1 ($11.8 million). Regardless, the three releases have amassed a decent box office total of around $35 million together.
