Marvel's new film "Captain America: Brave New World" had no problem topping the charts in an otherwise modest President's Day weekend, although it wasn't exactly the huge opening Marvel was used to having, either. The threequel "Paddington in Peru" also opened in theaters over the weekend, but its numbers were disappointing.

"Captain America: Brave New World" opened in first place with $87.8 million from 4,105 theaters over the 3-day frame, and $100 million for the 4-day extended holiday weekend. While that's the biggest debut of 2025, so far, it's only the fourth-best President's Day opening. Overseas it adds another $92.4 million for a worldwide debut of $192.4 million against a reported budget of $180 million. The film received mixed reviews from both critics (50% on Rotten Tomatoes) and moviegoers ("B-" CinemaScore).
"Paddington in Peru" opened at a distant second place with $13 million from 3,890 theaters for the 3-day, and $16 million for the 4-day. That's a small improvement on the $11 million debut of "Paddington 2". Internationally the film was released in theaters in November, 2024, and has since grossed $115.8 million, bringing the global cume to $131.8 million. However, since the film cost $90 million to produce, it will have a hard time turning a profit. The first film grossed a total of $76.2 million domestically and $249.8 million internationally, while the first sequel raked in $40.9 million in North America and $249.2 million overseas. "Paddington in Peru" received rave reviews from critics (94% on Rotten Tomatoes) and moviegoers also enjoyed it ("A" CinemaScore).
The romantic slasher comedy "Heart Eyes" finished its sophomore weekend in third place with $9.8 million, receiving a surprising 18.6% boost compared to the previous frame. The film has now grossed a total of $22.5 million.
The animated film "Dog Man" dropped from #1 to #4 in its third week and raked in $9.8 million. That's a 29% decline from last week, and its domestic total now stands at $69.6 million. Overseas it adds another $17.6 million for a global total of $87.2 million.
The Top 5 is rounded out by the Chinese animated adventure fantasy "Ne Zha 2" which opened with $7.2 million from 660 theaters. The film opened in China in January and has since grossed a total of $1.046 billion, surpassing "The Battle at Lake Changjin" ($913 million) as the highest-grossing Chinese film ever.
