DreamWorks Animation's new film "Dog Man" based on the popular children's graphic novel topped the charts over the weekend, while the sci-fi horror film "Companion" came in at a far second place. As February kicks in, December-January holdovers are still giving the box office a welcome boost.

"Dog Man" opened in first place with $36 million from 3,885 theaters, while overseas it raked in $4.4 million. That's a worldwide debut of $40.4 million against a $40 million budget. The film received a positive reception from both critics and moviegoers (78% on Rotten Tomatoes and "A" CinemaScore).
Warner Bros' "Companion" opened with $9.3 million from 3,285 theaters against a $10 million budget. The film also grossed $5.3 million from foreign markets. The film received rave reviews from critics (93% on Rotten Tomatoes) and audiences mostly liked it ("B+" CinemaScore).
"Mufasa: The Lion King" dropped to #3 but is still doing well. The film grossed $6.3 million over its seventh weekend, which is a soft 26.6% decline from the previous frame. The film has now grossed $229.6 million domestically and $423.5 million overseas for a worldwide total of $653.2 million.
The comedy "One of Them Days" finished in fourth place with $5.8 million. The film only dropped 26.6% in its third week, and has now grossed a total of $34.3 million.
Mel Gibson's thriller "Flight Risk" took a nose-dive, dropping 53.1% in its sophomore weekend. The film rounds out the Top 5 with $5.4 million, and has now grossed $20.7 million in North America. Overseas it raked in another $4.2 million. With a budget of $25 million, the film won't be as profitable as Lionsgate no doubt expected.
