Weekend Box-Office: VENOM 3 Tops Charts With Lowest Opening of Trilogy

Weekend Box Office Venom The Last Dance

"Venom: The Last Dance", the third and final installment in the comic book trilogy, fell short of expectations but still opened at the top of the box office. Meanwhile, the Vatican thriller "Conclave" scored a decent debut. Overall, the box-office was down from last year for a third consecutive frame, and a lot of the blame lies with DC's "Joker: Folie A Deux" which has already exited the Top 10 after three weeks in theaters.

"Venom: The Last Dance" opened in the top spot with $51 million from 4,131 theaters, falling below projections of $65 million. The threequel's debut is much lower than those of the previous two installments, 2018's "Venom" ($80 million) and 2021's "Venom: Let There Be Carnage" ($90 million). The film also raked in $124 million from international markets, which brings its worldwide debut to a total of 175 million. The film cost around $120 million to produce. "Venom: The Last Dance" received negative reviews from critics (37% on Rotten Tomatoes), but the audience reception was slightly better ("B-" CinemaScore).

"Smile 2" finished its sophomore weekend in second place with $9.5 million. That's a 58.6% decline from its debut frame, which is much worse than the first film's 18% second weekend drop. The film has now grossed a total of $40.8 million domestically and $43 million internationally, which adds up to $83.8 million worldwide against a $28 million production budget.

Now in its fifth week, "The Wild Robot" finished in third place with $6.8 million, down only 32.6% from the previous frame. The film's domestic total has reached $111.6 million, while overseas it grossed a total of $121.4 million. The worldwide cume now stands at $233.1 million.

The acclaimed papal thriller "Conclave" opened in fourth place with $6.6 million from 1,753 theaters. It's an above-expectations debut for the PG-rated film, which hopes to get into the Oscars race next year. The film received rave reviews from critics (93% on Rotten Tomatoes), while the audience reception was mixed-to-positive ("B+" CinemaScore).

The Top 5 is rounded out by the drama "We Live in Time" starring Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh. The film grossed another $4.8 million this week, gaining 15% from last week when it first expanded nationwide. It has now grossed $11.7 million in North America.
