Anne Hathaway Returns For PRINCESS DIARIES 3 With Adele Lim Set to Direct

It is finally confirmed that "Princess Diaries 3" is in the works. Anne Hathaway will reprise the role of Mia Thermopolis, who in the first film learned that she's the heir apparent to the throne of Genovia, and the Disney sequel will be directed by Adele Lim ("Joy Ride", "Raya and the Last Dragon") from a script by Flora Greeson ("The High Note").

The sequel has been in development since 2022. Plot details haven't been confirmed, but the new installment is not expected to be a reboot, but a continuation of the story in 2001's "The Princess Diaries" and the 2004 sequel "Royal Engagement". Both films grossed a total of $300 million worldwide.

Lim said in a statement: "As a diehard fan of the original ‘Princess Diaries,’ I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life. We look forward to celebrating its core tenants of female power, joy and mentorship with audiences worldwide.".

The film is produced by Debra Martin Chase, who originated the film franchise. Hathaway will also produce under her Somewhere Pictures banner. Lim's producing partner Naia Cucukov will executive produce the film alongside Melissa Stack.
