Art the Clown slayed comic book villain Joker this weekend as the horror sequel "Terrifier 3" claimed the top spot, and the DC Studios movie suffered a catastrophic sophomore frame drop. Meanwhile, the animated biopic "Piece by Piece" scored a modest debut, and the Trump biopic "The Apprentice" barely made it into the Top 10.

"Terrifier 3" grossed $18.9 million over the weekend from 2,514 theaters. That's quite an improvement from the second film, which grossed $10.6 million in its entire theatrical run. Even more impressive is that the threequel only cost $2 million to produce. The critical reception has been positive (76% on Rotten Tomatoes), while the audience reception is lukewarm ("B" CinemaScore).
"The Wild Robot" is holding in second place with $14 million, down 25.9%, bringing its domestic tally to $84.2 million. Overseas it adds another $65 million for a global total of $149.3 million.
Also holding in third place is "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" with $7.3 million, a 27.8% decline from the previous frame. Domestically, the film has grossed $275.8 million, while internationally it raked in $145.2 million. That's a worldwide total of $421 million.
"Joker: Folie à Deux" broke a record, but not one Warner Bros can be proud of. It is now officially the movie with the lowest-ever drop. The sequel lost 81.4% in its second weekend, grossing $7 million for a fourth place finish over the weekend. The 2009 "Friday the 13th" reboot held the record for the highest drop ever with 80.4%. Even "The Marvels" only dropped 78% in its sophomore frame. Now "Joker: Folie à Deux" is the new record-holder, and with only $51.5 million grossed so far, it probably won't reach the $100 million milestone domestically. Overseas it did gross $113.4 million, which brings its worldwide cume to $164.9 million, but with a budget of $200 million, Warner Bros is set to lose around $150-200 million.
The Top 5 is rounded out by the animated Pharrell Williams documentary/biopic "Piece by Piece" which opened with just $3.8 million from 1,865 theaters against a $16 million budget. The film received a positive reception from both critics (81% on Rotten Tomatoes) and moviegoers ("A" CinemaScore).
