Academy Award and Golden Globe-nominated actress Amanda Seyfried ("Mank", "Mamma Mia") is set to play Theranos founder Elizabeth Holmes in the Hulu series "The Dropout", replacing Kate McKinnon who exited the project in February. Seyfried will also produce.
Based on the ABC Radio and ABC News podcast about Holmes, the series chronicles the story of the enigmatic Stanford dropout who founded medical testing start-up Theranos and was hailed as the Steve Jobs for the next tech generation. Once worth billions of dollars, the myth crumbled when it was revealed that none of the tech actually worked, putting thousands of people's health in grave danger. She was indicted by a federal jury in 2018, along with the former Theranos chief operating officer, on nine counts of wire fraud and two counts of conspiracy to commit wire fraud.
The story of Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos is an unbelievable tale of ambition and fame gone terribly wrong. How did the world's youngest self-made female billionaire lose it all in the blink of an eye ?
"The Dropout" is executive produced by Elizabeth Meriwether, who will also serve as showrunner, Liz Heldens, Liz Hannah, Katherine Pope, Rebecca Jarvis, Victoria Thompson and Taylor Dunn.
Seyfried can next be seen in Amy Koppelman's "A Mouthful of Air", and the Netflix thriller "Things Heard & Seen".
