A TIME TO KILL Sequel With Matthew McConaughey in the Works at HBO

A TIME TO KILL Sequel With Matthew McConaughey in the Works at HBO
Matthew McConaughey is set to star in an upcoming HBO series adaptation of John Grisham's novel "A Time for Mercy", a followup to the author's books "A Time to Kill" and "Sycamore Row".

Directed by Joel Schumacher, the 1996 big screen adaptation of "A Time To Kill" starred McConaughey as attorney Jake Brigance, who defends a Black man (Samuel L. Jackson) who killed the two white men who savagely raped his daughter. The sequel, "A Time for Mercy" follows Brigance as he defends a 16-year-old boy who killed his mother's boyfriend, a deputy sheriff, with the boy claiming the man was abusive towards his mother, himself, and his little sister. Brigance's fierce commitment to saving Drew from the gas chamber puts his career and the safety of his family on the line.

The series will be eight to ten episodes, and it will be executive produced by Lorenzo Di Bonaventura and produced by Warner Bros. Television. No writer is attached to the project yet.

This marks McConaughey's return to HBO following his Emmy and Golden Globe-nominated role in "True Detective". He was also attached to star in an FX series called "Redeemer" created by Nic Pizzolatto ("True Detective"), but when the actor dropped out, the project was scrapped.

The 1996 film "A Time to Kill" helped launch McConaughey's career, grossing $152 million worldwide. The film also starred Sandra Bullock, Ashley Judd, Donald Sutherland, Kiefer Sutherland and Kevin Spacey.
