Phoebe Waller-Bridge ("Fleabag") and Donald Glover ("Atlanta") will create and star in a series based on the 2005 film "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" that starred Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. The film grossed $487 millions worldwide.
The series is co-created by "Atlanta" writer/producer Francesca Sloane, who will also serve as showrunner, and has quietly been in the works for months, stemming from Waller-Bridge's overall deal with Amazon. Amazon plans to release it in 2022.
The original film followed a bored suburban married couple who also happen to be rival spies. The film's director Doug Liman and scribe Simon Kinberg previously attempted to create a TV adaptation in 2006. Their project went to pilot at ABC, but in the end it wasn't picked up to series.
New Regency's Yariv Milchan and Michael Schaefer will executive produce alongside Jenny Robins of Wells Street Films.
