The Mandalorian star Pedro Pascal is set to star in HBO's upcoming series "The Last of Us" based on the popular PlayStation video game of the same name dedveloped by Naughty Dog. While the series will cover the events from the original game, it will also feature elements from the game's sequel, "The Last of Us Part II".
The story is set 20 years after humanity has been nearly wiped out by a mysterious outbreak, and it follows Joel (Pscal), a hardened survivor hired to smuggle Ellie ("Game of Thrones" actress Bella Ramsey), a 14-year-old girl with an apparent immunity to the plague, away from an oppressive quarantine zone and into the care of scientists supposedly on the verge of a breakthrough. What starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal, heartbreaking cross-country journey, as they grow to depend on each other for survival.
The show will be written by "Chernobyl" creator Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, the game's creator. Russian filmmaker Kantemir Balagov ("Beanpole") will direct the pilot.
PlayStation Productions, Word Games, The Mighty Mint and Naughty Dog are all involved in production along with Sony Pictures Television.
Pascal will continue to appear in the "The Mandalorian".
