Tom Hanks to Star in Film Based on Mattel Action Figure MAJOR MATT MASON

Tom Hanks to Star in Film Based on Mattel Action Figure MAJOR MATT MASON
Tom Hanks is set to star in a film based on a Mattel action figure from the 1960s called Major Matt Mason. "The Da Vinci Code" and "Angels & Demons" scribe Akiva Goldsman will adapt the script from a short story about the character from Pulitzer Prize winner Michael Chabon.

Major Matt Mason is an astronaut who lives and works on the moon. The character was introduced in 1966 to coincide with the space race, and his look was inspired by designs seen in Life Magazine, Air Force Magazine and other space and aviation publications. The toy line also included characters like a space crew and alien allies and villains.

Mattel Films is co-producing the project. Hanks was originally attached to the project in 2012, when Robert Zemeckis was in talks to direct the film, from a script written by Hanks and Graham Yost.

Tom Hanks can next be seen in the biopic "A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood", in which he plays beloved children's host Fred Rogers. His future projects include Paul Greengrass' upcoming drama "News of the World", Baz Luhrmann's Elvis biopic, and the World War II drama "Greyhound", which he also wrote based on C.S. Forester's novel.
