Gerard Butler proves he's still got it as his latest action flick, the threequel "Angel Has Fallen" has topped the box-office charts this weekend. The faith-based sports drama "Overcomer" overperformed, but the horror film "Ready or Not" fell on the low end of expectations.

Lionsgate has every reason to be happy as "Angel Has Fallen" has become the studio's second film of the year to open in first place after "John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum". The film opened with an estimated $21.25 million from 3,286 theaters, which is actually the lowest in the franchise, but not by a lot. "London Has Fallen" opened with $21.6 million in 2016, while the first film, "Olympus Has Fallen" scored a $30.3 million debut in 2013. However, without any strong competition this week, the third installment managed to become the first in the franchise to open at #1.
"Angel Has Fallen" received mostly mixed-to-negative reviews from critics (40% on Rotten Tomatoes and 45 on Metacritic), which is on par with the previous films in the series, but audiences loved it (95% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes and "A-" grade from CinemaScore's polls).
The R-rated comedy "Good Boys" dropped to #2, but continues to perform strongly. The film dropped just 45% this weekend, grossing $11.7 million, which brings its domestic cume to $42 million after 10 days. Internationally, it brought in a total of $6.9 million from 22 markets.
Another newcomer, the faith-based drama "Overcomer" opened in third place, beating expectations with $8.2 million from 1,700 theaters. The film is the third largest debut for faith-based filmmakers Alex Kendrick and Stephen Kendrick, behind "Courageous" ($9.1 million in 2011) and "War Room" ($11.3 million over Labor Day weekend in 2015).
The film didn't sit well with critics (38% on Rotten Tomatoes and 17 on Metacritic), but it received an overwhelmingly positive reception from moviegoers (99% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes and a rare "A+" grade from CinemaScore), which will no doubt help the film's staying power in the weeks to come.
In fourth place we find Disney's "The Lion King" which dropped just 35% and grossed $8.2 million this weekend for a domestic total of $510.6 million. Internationally it added another $30 million from 56 markets, which brings its international cume very close to topping the $1 billion mark. Worldwide, the film has grossed a total of $1.5 billion.
Universal's "Hobbs & Shaw" rounds out the Top 5 with $8.1 million. The film's domestic tally has reached $147 million after four weeks in theaters. Overseas, it received a considerable boost after opening in China with $102 million, which is the country's largest August debut ever and the second largest franchise opening, behind "The Fate of the Furious". The film has grossed a total of $441.2 million internationally, and its worldwide cume has reached $588.9 million.
Fox Searchlight's R-rated horror film "Ready Or Not" will finish the weekend in sixth place with an estimated $7.55 million from 2,855 theaters, which is the studio's widest release, so far. The film opened on Wednesday and raked in $3 million in its first two days. Its 10-day tally adds up to $10.5 million, which is definitely on the low end of both pundit and industry expectations, and yet another disappointing Disney release of a Fox movie.
"Ready or Not" was well received by both critics (87% on Rotten Tomatoes and 63 on Metacritic) and moviegoers (82% Audience Score on Rotten Tomatoes and a "B+" grade from CinemaScore's polls).
New Wide Releases: "Angel Has Fallen", "Overcomer", "Ready or Not".
