THE BATMAN Release Date Set for Summer 2021; Ben Affleck is No Longer the Caped Crusader

Ben Affleck The Batman Picture

Warner Bros. has set the date for the release of their next "Batman" movie. The next standalone installment featuring the caped crusader, or dark knight, whichever you prefer, is scheduled for June 25, 2021. The film will be directed by Matt Reeves ("Dawn of the Planet of the Apes", "Cloverfield") and it will not star Ben Affleck.

The actor was also originally set to direct off a script co-written with DC's Geoff Johns. Affleck, who played Batman in "Batman V. Superman", "Suicide Squad" and "Justice League", stepped down from playing the character because he felt he wasn't the right one for this particular version. Also, in a 2016 interview he seemed to admit he was having difficulty writing it. A search is underway for the new Dark Knight, and reports suggest that Reeves might be looking for a younger actor.

Affleck is nevertheless quite busy at the moment. He will be starring in and producing the adaptation of Kate Alice Marshall's novel "I Am Still Alive", and he's also starring in Gavin O'Connor's drama "Torrance".
