Idris Elba has signed on to star in the upcoming big-screen adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber's famous Broadway musical "Cats". The film will be directed by Tom Hooper ("Les Miserables") and it has already assembled an impressive cast that includes Ian McKellen, Jennifer Hudson, James Corden and Taylor Swift.
Elba will star as Macavity, and if you guessed that he's the villain, well, you guessed right. The plot follows a tribe of cats called the Jellicles, who have to make what is known as "the Jellicle choice" and decide which cat will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new life. Macavity is involved in the kidnapping of the Jellicle leader Old Deuteronomy.
"Cats" is one of the longest-running shows in West End and Broadway history since its premiere at the New London Theatre in 1981, where it played for 21 years. The Brodway production won seven Tonys and ran for 18 years. The musical is based on T.S. Eliot's "Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats".
Elba is currently working on the "Fast & Furious" spinoff "Hobbs & Shaw" alongside Dwayne Johnson and Jason Statham. He can also be seen in the Netflix comedy series "Turn Up Charlie", which he also co-created and executive produced, as well as the new season of the hit BBC crime drama series "Luther".
