Ansel Elgort to Star in Steven Spielberg's WEST SIDE STORY

Ansel Elgort Picture
Ansel Elgort will star in Steven Spielberg adaptation of the 1957 Broadway musical "West Side Story", which was previously adapted for the big screen in 1961 by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins. Penned by Oscar nominee Tony Kushner ("Angels in America"), the new adaptation will begin filming in the summer of 2019.

Elgort has been cast as Tony, the character previously played by Larry Kert in the original Broadway show, and Richard Beymer in the classic film. Inspired by Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet", the story follows the rivalry between two teenage street gangs, the Jets and the Sharks, and two lovers destined for tragedy as the tensions between the gangs escalate.

Spielberg has also recruited Justin Peck, one of Broadway's hottest choreographers, who won a Tony Award for this year's Broadway revival of "Carousel". The film will be produced by Spielberg, Kevin McCollum and Kristie Macosko Krieger.

Elgort was recently nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance in "Baby Driver". He is also set to star in the big screen adaptation of the Pulitzer-winning book "The Goldfinch", which will be released in October 2019.
