Martin Freeman to Star in ITV Drama A CONFESSION

Martin Freeman Picture
"Sherlock" star Martin Freeman is set to star in ITV Studios' upcoming six-part drama "A Confession". Produced by Studiocanal's Urban Myth Films, the series will focus on real-life Detective Superintendent Steve Fulcher (Freeman), who deliberately breached police procedure and protocol to catch a killer, ruining his career and reputation as a result. The case involved the disappearance of a 22-year-old woman who failed to return home after a night out with girlfriends at a local nightclub in Swindon, Wiltshire in March 2011.

Created by Oscar nominated "Philomena" scribe Jeff Pope, the series also stars BAFTA-winner and Oscar-nominated actress Imelda Staunton ("Vera Drake") as the mother of another young woman, who disappeared eight years earlier, who fears her daughter might be involved in the new case. The entire series will be directed by Paul Andrew Williams ("London to Brighton").

Pope spoke about the series and said: "I found this is a fascinating story to tell on a number of levels. On one hand it is a brilliant piece of detective work, but it brings into question how we want our police to behave when someone goes missing. Should Fulcher have been praised as a courageous officer fighting for the life of a girl, or lose his career for riding rough shod over the law?"

Freeman was also recently cast in the FX parental comedy "Breeders", which will debut in 2020.
