Weekend Box-Office: BLACK PANTHER Reigns Supreme With $700 Million Worldwide

Disney and Marvel's "Black Panther" is still the top movie at the box-office, and doesn't show signs of slowing down. Meanwhile, new releases "Annihilation", "Game Night" and "Every Day" performed as expected.

Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.

"Black Panther" continutes to dominate the box-office, holding its position at the top spot for a second consecutive weekend. The film grossed $108 million over the weekend, delivering the second largest weekend of all-time, behind only "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" ($149.2 million). With a domestic total of $400 million, the film has also become the third fastest to top $400 million, behind "Jurassic World" ($402.8 million)  and "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" ($440.1 million). Of course, that could change once the actuals are announced. "Black Panther" is currently the fifth highest grossing installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and will definitely rise further in the next weeks. Overseas the film has grossed $304 million.

In second place we have the first of the new wide releases, the R-rated comedy "Game Night" with a $16.6 million debut against a $37 million budget. It also opened with a modest $5.2 million overseas. The film received positive reviews from critics (81% on Rotten Tomatoes and 66 on Metacritic), while audiences responded with a decent "B+" on CinemaScore's polling.

"Peter Rabbit" is doing surprisingly well, dropping just 28% and finishing in third place this weekend with $12.5 million. The film has grossed $70 million, so far against a $50 million budget.

Another new arrival, the sci-fi thriller "Annihilation" opened with $11 million, which isn't much, but in line with expectations given that sci-fi films outside of well known franchises don't do very well, and the competition right now is fierce. The director's previous sci-fi film "Ex Machina" grossed $25.4 million in its entire run in theaters despite rave reviews. That film went on to win an Oscar for Best Visual Effects. "Annihilation" cost  $40 million to produce. Netflix and Paramount have struck a deal for the film's international streaming rights. The film received high acclaim from critics (86% on Rotten Tomatoes and 80 on Metacritic), but CinemaScore reportes a surprisingly low "C" grade from their polls.

The Top 5 is rounded up by "Fifty Shades Freed" with 6.9 million after a steep 60% drop. The film has topped $300 million worldwide.

The last of the (semi) wide new releases, the YA fantasy romance adaptation "Every Day" opened in ninth place with $3.1 million from 1,661 theaters, which is pretty good since the film has a small $5 million budget. The film has received mixed reviews from critics (50% on Rotten Tomatoes and 53 on Metacritic) while CinemaScore reported a "B+" grade.
