The weekend featured two new releases, "12 Strong" and "Den of Thieves" that performed better than expected, but it's still "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" that dominates the box-office for a third consecutive weekend, more than a month after its release.
Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.
"Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" seems to really like the way it feels at the top of the charts, because it just won't go away. Not that it has much competition these days, but it's something to still be the #1 film three weeks in a row after you've been in theaters for over a month. The film grossed $20 million over the weekend after a soft 29% drop. Its domestic cume has surpassed $300 million and overseas it's closing in on the $500 million mark.
In second place we have the first of the new releases, the fact-based war drama "12 Strong" which opened with $16.5 million. Initial studio projections indicated a $15 million debut, so things worked out well for the war flick. It also helps a lot that the film only cost $35 million to produce. The film received mostly mixed reviews from critics (53% on Rotten Tomatoes and 55 on Metacritic) while CinemaScore reported an "A" grade from moviegoers.
New arrival "Den of Thieves" starring Gerard Butler opened in third place with $15.3 million, another solid performance that exceeded expectations which initially projected that it would finish below $10 million. It's also worth noting that it opened in 2,432 theaters, so it wasn't one of those huge 3,000+ wide releases. The film received a mixed reception from critics (43% on Rotten Tomatoes and 50 on Metacritic) and a decent "B+" grade from CinemaScore.
Steven Spielberg's "The Post" dropped to #4 and grossed $12.1 million, bringing its domestic cume to $45.1 million. It also opened overseas, bringing in another $9.9 million from 23 countries, so far.
The Top 5 is rounded up by the "The Greatest Showman", a film that continues to amaze. The film dropped just 12% this weekend and grossed $11 million. Its domestic total now stands at $113.4 million after 33 days in theaters, and it also raked in $118 million overseas. The film's production budget is a reported $84 million.
The last of the new wide releases, the romantic drama "Forever My Girl" opened in tenth place with $4.7 million from 1,115 locations, which is decent considering its $10 million production budget. The film will expand further next week. While critics pretty much hated the film (18% on Rotten Tomatoes and 36 on Metacritic), it seems to have found an audience if we are to believe CinemaScore's "A" grade.
