Over the weekend we finally witnessed the fall of Disney's behemoth "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" after four consecutive weekends at #1. Responsible for this change at the box-office are the fourth installment in the horror franchise "Insidious: The Last Key" and the sequel/reboot "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle".
Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.
The Dwayne Johnson starrer "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" managed to claim the top spot at the box-office for the first time since its release on December 20. The film grossed $36 million over the weekend and has raked in an impressive $244.3 million domestically and another $275 million overseas. The film only dropped 28% over the weekend, so it's expected to continue its amazing performance throughout the week.
In second place we have the new wide release "Insidious: The Last Key", a new installment in the horror franchise created by James Wan and Leigh Whannell. The sequel has delivered the franchise's second largest debut with $29.2 million and also earned another $20.1 million from international markets, all against a $10 million budget. The film received mixed to negative reviews from critics (27% on Rotten Tomatoes and 49 on Metacritic) and a modest B- from CinemaScore's opening day polls.
"Star Wars: The Last Jedi" tumbled to #3 with a weekend gross of $23.5 million. The film has still earned a respectable $572.5 million, the sixth largest domestic release of all-time, so far, and another $632.7 million overseas. The big news related to the eighth chapter of the "Star Wars" saga comes from China, where it only managed a $28.7 million opening weekend, well behind the $52.3 million debut of "The Force Awakens". Overall, "The Last Jedi", which has grossed $1.2 billion worldwide up to this point, will most likely end up with far less than the $2 billion grossed by its predecessor.
"The Greatest Showman" continues to hold its ground remarkably well at #4, dropping just 11% and grossing $13.8 million. Its domestic tally has reached $75.9 million, with an additional $74.4 million brought in from overseas markets. Overall not bad for a movie that opened with just $8.8 million 19 days ago.
The Top 5 is rounded up by the threequel "Pitch Perfect 3" with $10.2 million. The film has grossed $85.9 million domestically and $55 million internationally versus a $45 million production budget.
