"Black Panther" secured its third consecutive weekend at the top of the box-office and continues to blow away expectations. Meanwhile, new arrivals "Red Sparrow" and "Death Wish" performed as well as can be expected for hard R-rated films going against Disney's behemoth.
Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.
Disney and Marvel's comic book adaptation "Black Panther" scored $65.7 million over the weekend and raised its domestic cume to $501.1 million, becoming the third fastest film to do so, tied with "Jurassic World" and behind "Star Wars: The Last Jedi". The film is also the third installment in the MCU to top $500 million in just three weeks alongside "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" and "The Avengers". "Black Panther" is currently the tenth highest grossing domestic release of all-time. Meanwhile, worldwide the film has grossed a total of $396.6 million. It will open in China next weekend.
New arrival "Red Sparrow" finished in second place, opening with $17 million from 3,056 locations. That's pretty much what the studio expected for the R-rated flick. It also brought in another $26.5 million from overseas markets. The film has a reported $69 million budget, which it might just recoup from worldwide ticket sales, but domestically it doesn't look like it can go higher than $40+ million. "Red Sparrow" received mixed reviews from critics (51% on Rotten Tomatoes and 54 on Metacritic) and a modest "B" grade from CinemaScore's audience polls.
In third place we have the other new wide release, the revenge thriller remake "Death Wish", which opened with $13 million from 2,847 locations. Once again, that's pretty much as expected, and pretty good considering it has a small $30 million budget. The film received negative reviews from critics (15% on Rotten Tomatoes and 31 on Metacritic), but a decent "B+" from CinemaScore.
Last week's new release, the dark comedy "Game Night" dropped 37%, grossing $10.7 million. This brings its domestic total to $33.5 million, while overseas the film has reached $16 million.
The Top 5 is rounded up by "Peter Rabbit" which finished the weekend with $10 million, bringing its domestic cume to $84 million. The film also opened internationally, bringing in $17.8 million, including $12.7 million from China.
New Wide Releases: "Red Sparrow", "Death Wish".
Biggest Drop : "Fifty Shades Freed" (-53.7%)
Smallest Drop : "Peter Rabbit" (-21%)
