Weekend Box-Office: Madea Sequel BOO 2! Tops the Charts As Other New Releases Struggle

I suppose it's no longer a surprise that Tyler Perry's movies make a lot of money, so then you won't find it strange that the latest Madea flick "Boo 2! A Madea Halloween" is at the top of the box-office, ahead of a big-budget disaster movie, a true story firefighter drama and a dark serial killer thriller, all of which have struggled over the weekend.

Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.

"Tyler Perry's Boo 2! A Madea Halloween" is the #1 movie at the box-office with a $21.6 million opening weekend against a $25 million budget. It's certainly a drop from the first film's $28.5 million debut, but still a decent performance. While critics absolutely hated it (8% on Rotten Tomatoes and 17 on Metacritic), CinemaScore reports an outrageous "A-", which means people actually love this movie. Just one more thing that is wrong with the world today.

The disaster blockbuster "Geostorm" made a weak debut in second place with $13.3 million, which is  more of a disaster than anything portrayed in the film, since Warner Bros. reports a $120 million production budget. Internationally it managed to rake in $49.6 million from 50 markets in 10 days. It's safe to say that it won't turn a profit anytime soon. As expected, the film wasn't a hit with critics (13% on Rotten Tomatoes and 21 on Metacritic), and only received an average "B-" grade on CinemaScore from opening day polls.

Last week's #1 movie, the slasher thriller with a loopy twist "Happy Death Day" fell to #3, grossing $9.3 million after a steep 64% drop. The film has earned $40.6 million domestically and adds another $12.9 million internationally. And it only cost $4.8 million to produce.

In fourth place we have "Blade Runner 2049", which continues to bleed about 50% each week. That's not good news for Warner Bros. The sci-fi sequel grossed $7.1 million over the weekend and has so far raked in $74 million domestically and another $120.1 million overseas against a $150 million production budget. It will be interesting to see how the international numbers change next week when it opens in China and Japan.

The firefighter drama "Only the Brave" opened in fifth place with $6 million from 2.577 theaters. It's a low figure, but it's actually exactly what Sony was expecting. The film wasn't very expensive, costing $38 million to produce, and was well-liked by both critics (90% on Rotten Tomatoes and 73 on Metacritic) and moviegoers ("A" on CinemaScore).

The last of the new wide releases, the thriller "The Snowman" suffered the worst debut of the weekend, opening in eighth place with $3.4 million from 1,812 theaters. The film has grossed $19 million overseas, which might help in recuperating its $35 million budget, but Universal's hopes for future sequels have been crushed. The film was ravaged by critics (9% on Rotten Tomatoes and 24 on Metacritic) and received a horrible "D" grade from CinemaScore, which really explains the low box-office numbers.

New Wide Releases: "Geostorm", "The Snowman", "Only the Brave", "Boo 2! A Madea Halloween".

Biggest Drop : "Happy Death Day" (-64%)
