Weekend Box-Office: IT Scares Off Competition With Record-Breaking Debut

As expected, the new Stephen King adaptation "It" topped the charts over the weekend, but the big news is that it also managed to break a bunch of records. And not a moment too soon, as the summer box-office ended up being a disappointment. Meanwhile, the romantic comedy "Home Again" made an unimpressive debut.

Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.

"It" claimed the top spot with an impressive $117 million opening versus a $35 million budget, and this performance qualifies for the following records: largest September opening (previously held by "Hotel Transylvania 2" with $48.5 million), largest Fall opening (previously held by '"Gravity" with $55.7 million) and largest debut for a horror film, R-rated or otherwise (previously held by "Paranormal Activity 3" with $52.5 million). It's also the second largest opening for an R-rated film, behind "Deadpool" ($132.4 million). Overseas, "It" scored another $62 million from 46 markets. The film received a decent "B+" on CinemaScore, and glowing reviews from critics (86% on Rotten Tomatoes and 70 on Metacritic).

The other new wide release, the romcom "Home Again" had to settle for much less, but still managed to finish in second place, grossing $9 million. That's pretty low for a wide release, but not a disaster, considering that the film had a reported budget of $35 million.  The film received mostly negative reviews from critics (34% on Rotten Tomatoes and 43 on Metacritic) but audiences liked it well enough, as CinemaScore reports a "B" grade from opening night moviegoers.

"The Hitman's Bodyguard" ends its fantastic hold and drops to #3. The film grossed $4.8 million, which brings its domestic cume to $64.8 million. "Annabelle: Creation" finished its fifth weekend in fourth place with $4 million and its domestic tally has reached $96.2 million. The Top 5 is rounded up by "Wind River" with $3.2 million.

"Spider-Man: Homecoming" added China to its overseas markets, which boosted its international earnings with another $70.8 million. Internationally the film has grossed $495.3 million, while domestically it finished in seventh place over the weekend with $2 million and has grossed $327.7 million, so far.

And in other news, "Despicable Me 3" has just become the third release of 2017 to cross the $1 billion mark worldwide.

New Wide Releases: "It", "Home Again".
