Weekend Box-Office: KINGSMAN Sequel Dethrones IT; LEGO NINJAGO MOVIE Disappoints

The reign of "It" at the box-office has come to an end as "Kingsman: The Golden Circle" topped the charts over the weekend. The other new releases, "The LEGO Ninjago Movie" and "Friend Request" fell short of expectations.

Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.

Fox's sequel "Kingsman: The Golden Circle" placed first with $39 million from 4,003 theaters, a small improvement on the original's $36.2 million debut. Overseas, the film grossed an additional $61.2 million from 55 markets. Next week will be very important in determining just how much the new installment will improve on the first film's $414 million worldwide. "The Golden Circle" received mixed to negative reviews from critics (51% on Rotten Tomatoes and 45 on Metacritic), but a decent "B+" grade from moviegoers according to CinemaScore's opening night polls.

The Stephen King adaptation "It" drops to second place with $30 million. The film is keeping a steady pace at this point and has grossed an impressive $266.3 million, making it the highest grossing R-rated horror film of all time, a record previously held by "The Exorcist" with $232.9 million (and as always, inflation was not taken into account). The film has also grossed $211.7 million internationally, bringing its worldwide cume very close to  $500 million.

"The LEGO Ninjago Movie" proved to be quite a disappointment. The film opened in third place with $21.2 million from 4,047 theaters, while pundits were expecting the film to open somewhere around $30 million. This is the worst debut for a LEGO movie, below the $53 million grossed by "The LEGO Batman Movie" this year, and well below the $69 million grossed by the original "LEGO Movie" in 2014. A certain franchise fatigue was noticed by critics and moviegoers alike, as the former gave it mixed reviews (53% on Rotten Tomatoes and 55 on Metacritic), while CinemaScore reports a "B+" grade, the first time a film in the franchise dropped below "A". "The LEGO Batman Movie" also underperformed when compared to the original ($311.9 million versus $469 million worldwide), and this one looks to finish even lower as internationally it only raked in $10.5 million from 37 markets.

In fourth place we have last week's new release "American Assassin" , which dropped a steep 58%, grossing $6.2 million. The film has grossed $26.1 million domestically and $6.1 million overseas. Against its $33 million budget, it doesn't sound so bad, but since Lionsgate and CBS Films probably intended to start up a franchise, (with so many books in the Mitch Rapp series to choose from for a sequel), these are hardly franchise-worthy numbers.

The romantic comedy "Home Again" starring Reese Witherspoon rounds up the Top 5 with $3.3 million. Despite a slow start, the film is actually holding really well, dropping only 36%. Its domestic tally has reached $22.3 million versus a $12 million budget.

Way down in sixth place we have the last of the new wide releases, the teen horror flick "Friend Request", which underperformed with $2.4 million, despite studio expectations hovering somewhere around $10 million. The film received terrible reviews from critics (20% on Rotten Tomatoes and 33 on Metacritic) and moviegoers mostly agreed according to CinemaScore's "C+" grade.

A breakthrough in the Top 10 is the true story drama "Stronger" starring Jake Gyllenhaal, which opened in limited release and managed to finish in ninth place with a strong $1.7 million from 574 theaters. The film's very positive response from critics and awards buzz probably helped it (95% on Rotten Tomatoes and 76 on Metacritic).

New Wide Releases: "Kingsman: The Golden Circle", "The LEGO Ninjago Movie", "Friend Request".

Biggest Drop : "American Assassin" (-58%)

Smallest Drop : "Home Again" (-36.1%)
