Things didn't quite turn out the way everyone was hoping at the box-office, as "Blade Runner 2049" failed to make much of an impression in its opening weekend, even though it managed to top the charts. The same goes for the other new releases, "The Mountain Between Us" and "My Little Pony".
Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.
"Blade Runner 2049" failed to provide Warner Bros. with a strong October debut as the film opened with a disappointing $31.5 million after initial projections expected the film to deliver somewhere around $50 million, or at least match the $45 million opening of "Mad Max: Fury Road", another reboot of a classic sci-fi property. As it is, the "Blade Runner" sequel, which cost $150 million to produce, is struggling domestically, while overseas it has grossed a decent $50 million from 63 markets, and will no doubt increase its cume considerably in November when it opens in China. "Blade Runner 2049" received stellar reviews from critics (89% on Rotten Tomatoes and 81 on Metacritic) and was mostly appreciated by moviegoers according to CinemaScore's "A-" grade from opening day polls.
In second place we have another new arrival, the adventure drama "The Mountain Between Us" starring Kate Winslet and Idris Elba. The film also fell below initial projections with $10.1 million, while overseas it grossed another $3.6 million from 11 markets. It's certainly not a great loss considering it only cost $35 million to produce. The film received mixed reviews from critics (46% on Rotten Tomatoes and 47 on Metacritic), but moviegoers seemed to like it as CinemaScore reports an "A-".
"It" dropped to third place with $9.6 million and its domestic cume has surpassed $300 million, while its international tally is a million and change short of that same milestone.
The last of the new releases, the animated feature "My Little Pony: The Movie" opened with 8.8 million from 2,528 theaters, which is also below expectations, as the film was projected to open somewhere around $10 million. Overseas it managed to gross a weak $3.8 million from 49 markets. The film received mixed reviews from critics (58% on Rotten Tomatoes and 41 on Metacritic), but received an "A-" from moviegoers, as reported by CinemaScore.
"Kingsman: The Golden Circle" rounds up the Top 5 with $8.1 million, after dropping a steep 52% from last week, and the film has now grossed almost $80 million domestically, lagging considerably behind the first film, which grossed a total of $128.2 million in the U.S.
The period drama "Victoria & Abdul" expanded further over the weekend and managed to finish in eighth place with $4.1 million. This is the film's first week in the Top 10.
New Wide Releases: "Blade Runner 2049", "The Mountain Between Us", "My Little Pony: The Movie".
Biggest Drop : "Kingsman: The Golden Circle" (-52.5%)
Smallest Drop : "Battle of the Sexes" (-29.8%)
