As a record-breaking September at the box-office has come to an end, we have three movies in an extremely tight race to the top spot. "It", "Kingsman: The Golden Circle" and new arrival "American Made" are pretty much neck-and-neck, and studios are waiting for the actuals that will be announced later today before claiming victory.
Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.
So, while we don't have the actuals at this point, we're going with the weekend estimates, and according to those, "It" is back in first place with $17.3 million. The horror film's domestic cume has reached $291.1 million and has grossed another $262 million overseas. These are amazing numbers, even better than most comic book adaptations, since it was made on a measly budget of $35 million.
In second place we have the first of the new wide releases, the R-rated biopic "American Made" starring Tom Cruise. The film grossed $17.01 million, a debut similar to and slightly better than Cruise's first "Jack Reacher" ($15.2 million in 2012). It has also raked in $64.7 million internationally since its release at the end of August. "American Made" was well received by critics (87% on Rotten Tomatoes and 65 on Metacritic), while CinemaScore reports a "B+" grade from opening day audiences.
Last week's #1 film "Kingsman: The Golden Circle" has fallen to #3 with $17 million, a considerable 56.4% drop from its opening weekend that currently puts the film behind its predecessor after 10 days in release. The sequel is performing better overseas, where it has raked in $126.2 million.
"The LEGO Ninjago Movie" continues to struggle as it drops to #4 with $12 million. With a domestic total of $35.5 million and another $22.7 million overseas, the film is shaping up to be the lowest grossing in the franchise.
Another new release, the "Flatliners" remake rounds up the Top 5 with $6.7 million, despite Sony expecting it to gross somewhere around $7-8 million. The 1990 original opened with $10 million ($21 million adjusted for inflation) and went on to gross a total of $61.4 million ($129.2 million adjusted for inflation). The remake also grossed $3.1 million overseas from 21 markets. The film received scathing reviews from critics (3% on Rotten Tomatoes and 31 on Metacritic), but moviegoers were more forgiving according to the "B-" grade reported by CinemaScore.
Last week's limited release "Battle of the Sexes" expanded nationwide into 1,213 theaters, grossing $3.4 million and seems to be struggling somewhat despite glowing reviews and a positive reception from moviegoers The film will expand further next week.
The last of the new releases, the thriller "'Til Death Do Us Part" made it into the Top 10 in ninth place with $1.5 million from 562 theaters. However, initial projections estimated that the film would gross around $4 million. Meanwhile, the faith-based drama "A Question of Faith" couldn't break in, grossing $1.05 million from 661 theaters, which is pretty low by faith-based standards.
Among the indie releases, Universal's "Victoria and Abdul" made a big impact with $1.03 million from just 77 theaters and has a chance of placing among the Top 10 films when it expands nationwide next week.
