Box-Office Report: HITMAN'S BODYGUARD Holds At #1 During Catastrophic Box-Office Weekend

The action-comedy "The Hitman's Bodyguard" is still #1 in its second week in theaters, but can't really brag about it as this past weekend has been the worst in over 15 years. New arrivals "Birth of the Dragon" and "Leap" are among the casualties.

Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.

The box-office was a mess, with the top twelve movies only grossing a combined $49 million, making it the worst weekend since September 2001. The cause of this could be Hurricane Harvey and the Mayweather vs. McGregor boxing match, but a lack of convincing wide releases might have also contributed to the situation.

In this context, last week's #1 film, "The Hitman's Bodyguard" managed a second consecutive victory, but a bitter one as it only managed to rake in $10 million. The film has reached a domestic gross of $39.6 million versus a $30 million budget.

In second place, "Annabelle: Creation" scored $7.3 million for a total of $77.8 million in the U.S. Internationally, the film has grossed $137.2 million. With its worldwide gross crossing the $200 million mark, Warner Bros. has secured a huge profit, as the film only cost $15 million to produce.

At #3 we have a new arrival, the animated film "Leap!", also known as "Ballerina" overseas. The Weinstein's film opened with a disappointing $5 million from 2,575 theaters, but it did better internationally, grossing $58.1 million against a budget of $30 million. The film received mixed to negative reviews from critics (37% on Rotten Tomatoes and 49 on Metacritic) but moviegoers gave it an "A", as reported by CinemaScore.

The Cannes contender "Wind River" expanded once again into 1,401 more theaters and brought in $4.4 million. The film has grossed $9.8 million, so far.

The Top 5 is rounded up by Steven Soderbergh's "Logan Lucky", which grossed $4.3 million over the weekend and has reached a rather unlucky $15 million in 10 days.

The other new wide release, the action biopic (of sorts) "Birth of the Dragon" opened in eighth place with $2.5 million from 1,618 theaters. The film's poor performance is attributed to the hurricane and the highly anticipated boxing match, but given that the film was accused of inaccuracies and has received scathing reviews from critics (23% on Rotten Tomatoes and 37 on Metacritic), it could just be that moviegoers simply avoided it. Those who didn't gave it a "B" on CinemaScore.

Another new release worth mentioning is the faith-based drama "All Saints" which is doing pretty well, although it only ranked 15th. The film has grossed $1.5 million from 846 theaters, and since next week is lacking in new wide releases, it might have a shot at breaking into the Top 10. It received surprisingly positive reviews from critics (89% on Rotten Tomatoes and 63 on Metacritic) and a solid "A-" from moviegoers, according to CinemaScore.

New Wide Releases: "Leap!", "Birth of the Dragon", "All Saints".

Biggest Drop : "The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature" (-56.6%)
