"It" topped the charts for a second consecutive weekend, grossing $60 million over the weekend. The film's domestic cume now stands at a spectacular $218.7 million and has officially become the highest grossing September release ever. The previous record holder was the 1986 film "Crocodile Dundee" with $174.8 million (not accounting for inflation). Overseas, the film is doing well with a tally of $152.6 million.
In second place we have the first of the new wide releases, the spy thriller "American Assassin". The film opened with $14.8 million, a modest, but overall okay debut as the film only cost $33 million to produce. It also grossed $6.2 million internationally from 41 markets. It received mixed to negative reviews from critics (35% on Rotten Tomatoes and 46 on Metacritic), but moviegoers gave it an okay "B+" according to CinemaScore's opening night polls.
The other new arrival, Darren Aronofsky's horror drama "mother! finished in third place with a disappointing $7.5 million from 2,368 theaters, making this the worst debut for Jennifer Lawrence, even worse than her 2012 thriller "House at the End of the Street", which also opened in September with $12.2 million. "mother!" received decent reviews from critics (69% on Rotten Tomatoes and 74 on Metacritic), but ended up with a painful "F" grade on CinemaScore, which doesn't signal good things for the following week.
After opening in second place last week, the romcom "Home Again" starring Reese Witherspoon finished this week in fourth place with $5.3 million, and a domestic total of $17.1 million. It managed to hold well, dropping only 38%.
The Top 5 is rounded up by "The Hitman's Bodyguard" with $3.5 million. The action comedy has grossed $70.3 million domestically after five weeks and continues to hold well, dropping only 26%.
In other news,"War of the Planet of the Apes" opened in China and delivered the largest opening ever for a Fox release with $62.3 million. It's a breath of fresh air for the trilogy capper, which has grossed $433.7 million worldwide, well behind the $710.6 million grossed by "Dawn of the Planet of the Apes".
Christopher Nolan's "Dunkirk" also made headlines last week as it crossed $500 million worldwide.
