Weekend Box-Office: THE HITMAN'S BODYGUARD Tops the Charts While LOGAN LUCKY Gets Left Behind

The action comedy "The Hitman's Bodyguard" effortlessly secured the top spot at the box-office over the weekend as the overall market is still behind 2016. Meanwhile, new arrival "Logan Lucky", Steven Soderbergh's return to the director's chair, fell behind and ended up being a disappointment.

Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.

"The Hitman's Bodyguard" swooped down and removed "Annbelle: Creation" from the top spot. The film scored a $21.6 million debut versus a $29 million budget. While critics did not like it much (38% on Rotten Tomatoes and 50 on Metacritic), the film nevertheless charmed audiences well enough, as CinemaScore reports a "B+" grade from opening night moviegoers.

In second place, the horror prequel "Annabelle: Creation" continues to perform well with $15.5 million, bringing its domestic cume to $64 million and another $96.7 million from overseas markets. At this point, "The Conjuring" franchise has crossed the $1 billion mark worldwide.

Steven Soderbergh's return at the helm of a theatrical release was mostly unlucky, despite its title. "Logan Lucky" opened with $8 million from 3,031 theaters. For Soderbergh it's not the absolute lowest opening. That unholy honor goes to his 2002 remake "Solaris" which opened with $6.7 million. However, if you adjust for inflation, that film grossed around $10 million in its opening weekend.  "Logan Lucky" fared extremely well with critics (93% on Rotten Tomatoes and 78 on Metacritic), but that didn't impress moviegoers much, as they gave it a modest "B" grade, according to CinemaScore.

At #4, Christopher Nolan's "Dunkirk" grossed $6.7 million and has now raked in $165.5 million in the U.S. and $227.2 million internationally. The film is now Nolan's fifth largest worldwide release, topping the $372.7 million grossed by "Batman Begins".

The Top 5 is rounded up by the animated sequel "The Nut Job 2: Nutty by Nature" which grossed $5.1 million. Its domestic total has now reached $17.6 million, which isn't that great considering it cost $40 million to produce.

In other news, the thriller "Wind River", which won the Un Certain Regard award at this year's Cannes Film Festival, expanded into 649 more theaters and grossed $3 million over the weekend, finishing in 10th place.

New Wide Releases: "The Hitman's Bodyguard", "Logan Lucky".
