The weekend battle ended with Christopher Nolan's "Dunkirk" once again conquering the box-office charts, while new arrivals "Atomic Blonde" and "The Emoji Movie" simply couldn't rally enough moviegoers to make a dent.
Find out more about the weekend box office after the jump.
"Dunkirk" finished its second weekend at the box-office with $28.1 million, a soft-ish 44% drop, which brings the war epic to a domestic total of $102.8 million and $131.3 million overseas versus a $100 million budget, and the film still has to open in Italy, China and Japan.
In second place we have the first of the new wide releases, Sony's animated feature "The Emoji Movie". The film scored a $25.6 million debut, despite extremely negative reviews from critics (8% on Rotten Tomatoes). Moviegoers seemed to be a little more forgiving as CinemaScore gave it a "B" grade, which seems to contrast with the impressively bad 1.4 score on IMDb.com
Last week's surprise hit, the R-rated comedy "Girls Trip" managed a healthy 36% drop in its second weekend, grossing $20 million. The film has raked in $65.5 million domestically versus a $19 million budget.
The other new wide release, the action thriller "Atomic Blonde" only managed a #4 debut, opening with $18.5 million, which is a pretty disappointing outcome. The film has received positive reviews from critics (75% on Rotten Tomatoes) and a decent amount of buzz, but audiences did not respond with the same enthusiasm as CinemaScore announced a modest "B" grade for the film. However, since the film only cost $30 million to produce, it's not the end of the world.
The Top 5 is rounded up by "Spider-Man: Homecoming" with $13.4 million. The comic book adaptation has grossed $633.7 million worldwide.
New Wide Releases: "Atomic Blonde", "The Emoji Movie".
Biggest Drop : "Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" (-60%)
Smallest Drop : "Girls Trip" (-35%)
